For those who have bought the sherline 5400/5410 mill, have you realized that the total Y-axis cutting travel is only around 4 inches? And not 5″. Maybe i’m the stupid one, but i was under the impression that i’ll be able to cut 5″ on the Y-axis as it was stated in the specifications that it is capable of that amount of travel.
Anyway, i was wrong as the Y-axis travel is limited by the distant of the cutting bit, to the Z-axis support. The solution to this: extend the head block by using and additional “MILL HEADSTOCK SPACER”, part number #1297.
With this extension, my 0,0,0 is now always positioned at the top left of my stock, to ensure i get the maximum cutting area.
I’ve slotted a thick piece of paper between the 2 headstock spacer because it seems that the headstocks cannot be attached to each other firmly. This is because the set screw that tightens the headstocks together is not sitting in the right position, thus the additional paper will correct this. Hard to explain in detail, but if anybody is interested in the reason and illustration, do drop me an email, i’ll be glad to help out.
